For 52 weeks, we will be introducing a new challenge to better the environment each week. A new goal will be set forth to add on to the previous weeks goal and after one year, you will have 52 lifestyle changes that will better the environment.

Everyone starts a new year with a resolution. But at Sea Voice News, we want everyone’s year to be much bigger than one resolution. Picture this as a snowball rolling down a mountain. At the top, it’s one small singular snowball. But as it starts rolling down the mountain, it adds more and more snow till it becomes massive. Week 1 is the top of the mountain and week 52 is the bottom. By the time we all reach week 52, our snowball will be one big change in the way we live our lives. It will be a real change to fighting the negative impact humans have on the environment.

Each week, our new goal will give us a chance to make a significant impact on the environment while not having to change our lifestyles too much. The reality of our society is that it does not take a lot to make an impact. This challenge will give you the opportunity to set weekly goals and continue to build on the them throughout the year.

So without further ado, introducing the goal for week 8….

Bike Everywhere!

Spring is here and to many northerners, that means the end of the long, cold winter. Millions of people are excited to get out to grill, hike and enjoy the activities offered by the outdoors.

But did you know, you can make a huge impact on our environment by taking up an outdoor activity and apply it to your everyday life? By choosing to ride a bike everywhere, you are providing yourself with a clean form of transportation that is good for your health. We believe that this summer should be the summer of the bike and below are nine reasons why you should get on board (or the seat)!

  1. Bicycles produce no meaningful pollution when in operation. Bikes are human powered machines that do not release any harmful emissions into the atmosphere. They also eliminate the oil, fuel and hydraulic fluids dripped by automobiles onto the road surface — which means less toxic runoff into local waterways.
  2. A bicycle has a tiny manufacturing footprint when compared to a car. All manufactured goods have environmental impact, but bicycles can be produced for a fraction of the materials, energy and shipping costs of a car.
  3. Bicycles are an effective alternative to a second car. If you’re place of work is a bit out of reach with a bike, you can substitute a bike for other activities. By substituting a bike as a second car, you can literally save thousands of dollars a year using a bicycle for workday commuting and weekend errands in households which might otherwise be forced to maintain two cars.
  4. Using a bike for transportation can help you lose weight and improve your overall health. The health benefits of regular aerobic exercise are well-known. Depending on your riding style and local road conditions, you could easily burn 600 calories an hour through brisk cycling. Most bike commuters report losing 15 to 20 pounds during their first year in the saddle without changing their eating habits.
  5. You won’t need to purchase all that fuel for your vehicle. Fuel is cheap compared to years past, but it can still costs a pretty penny when you drive a lot. A healthy bike culture will result in less oil purchased and more money saved!
  6. Bikes cost much less to maintain and operate than automobiles. You’ll never throw a rod on a bicycle, and dropping a transmission on a bike usually means replacing a bent derailleur hanger or worn-out chain. Bicycles do require service, but you can learn to perform most of it yourself. Even if you have a shop do things for you, costs will be trivial compared to a car.
  7. Bicycles provide mobility for those who may not qualify or afford to drive. Not everyone can get a driver’s license (or wants one), and the cost of purchasing, insuring and maintaining a car is out of reach for a lot of people. Almost everyone can afford some sort of bike. Other than walking, bicycles are the most cost-effective transportation on the planet.
  8. Studies show that bicycle commuters are healthier, more productive, and require less time off at work. This is why most enlightened employers are eager to accommodate commuting cyclists. Healthy workers are better workers — and that’s good for the bottom line. Bikes are smart business.
  9. It’s easier to finance a new bicycle than a new car. Thanks to the recession, auto loans are hard to find these days — even if you have good credit. But for the price of a single car payment, you can buy a well-made bicycle that should outlast most cars. Add a few hundred dollars more for rain gear, lights and accessories, and you have all-weather, anytime transportation.
