A New Species Of Shrimp Is Named After Bilbo Baggins.

Marine biologists from Leiden University have discovered tiny fuzzy-footed tropical shrimp that live sin in shallow water tunicates in the Pacific Ocean around Indonesia.

The best part, due to the excessive amount of fine hairs on the tips its eight pereiopods (basically feet), the species was name Odontonia Bagginsi after The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings character.

The shrimp specimens were collected from the coastal reefs around the islands of Tidore and Ternate, which is part of the cluster known as the Spice Islands.

The discover was published in the journal Zookeys.

Explaining their decision to make name it after the Middle-earth character, the authors wrote, “inspired by the famous Hobbit family name ‘Baggins’ featured in the ‘The Hobbit’ and ‘The Lord of the Rings’ books. The fictional characters called ‘Hobbits’ possess hairy feet comparable to this species.”
