Starbucks To Get Rid Of Plastic Straws, Citing Threat To Ocean

The issue of plastic waste across the world has been a hot topic of conservation as the problem become catastrophic. Due to this, countries and companies across the world are cutting plastic use and in an exciting announcement, Starbucks Corp announced that they will eliminate single-use plastic straws from all of its locations within two years.

The announcement makes Starbucks the largest food and beverage company to ban plastic straws due to growing public concern.

Although plastic straws account for a small percentage of plastic pollution that ends in the ocean, they have become the symbol of our societies irresponsible use of plastic. The movement really began to gain in steam when a video of a sea turtle was found with a straw caught in the turtles nostril.

Starbucks announcement outlined that by 2020 it will be using straws made from biodegradable materials such as paper, along with specially designed lids.
